2018 – the year that was

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Now 2019 has arrived and we’ve said goodbye to 2018 it’s time to reflect on the year that was. ‘18 was a massive year here at Glenorchy Health and Fitness; there was triumph, challenges, fundraisers, events, amazing health and fitness achievements, and so much more. We are planning an even bigger and better year ahead, but for now here are just some of our many highlights from 2018.

DECEMBER:

The Merriest month of all; we celebrated in true GHF style with our ’12 challenges of Christmas’; helping you all stay on track for the month full of temptations. The challenge included everything from 20 burpees, 5 minute run on the treadmill, or trying out a Pump class, or Combat or Punch if Cardio is more your style. Everyone absolutely smashed it – we are so proud!

It didn’t stop there though, Santa Claus himself visited our Kids Club for our Christmas party. All the kids had the best time, and so did our special visitor from the North Pole. He visited more than once, even stopping by for his own pre-Christmas workout.

NOVEMBER:

November was full of fun-filled challenges for Glenorchy Health and Fitness staff and some of our members who participated in Hobart’s Point to Pinnacle half marathon. The event acclaimed as “the toughest half marathon in the world” involves a huge 21.1km climb up Mt Wellington. Well done everyone, what an achievement!

OCTOBER:

October was a month full of massive fitness success, with our 6 Week Challenge coming to an end. We saw some incredible results, 32 participants took part in the Challenge and they lost a combined total of 93.8kg and a whopping 853.5cm!

This month was also full of some important days to us personally here at GHF including Seniors Week and Mental Health week. We aim to raise awareness about the importance of an active lifestyle and healthy diet no matter what age you are as well as the benefits for mental health and wellbeing. We also celebrated Halloween in true Kids Club fashion, with some SPOOKY dress ups.

SEPTEMBER:

With the weather heating up, to mark the start of Spring we kicked off our second 6 Week Challenge of the year on the 17th of September. Our Challenge involved set meal plans with a variety of different food suited to all types of goals and body types. With the help of our Food Coaches it also involved weekly measurements, body scans and before and after photos to keep members motivated and accountable.

AUGUST:

With the weather becoming increasingly overcast, our members weren’t letting rainy conditions dampen their spirits! August was all about setting yourself up for health and fitness success. We had a special transformation package on offer including 4 weeks of personal training and food coaching for FREE if you signed up to become a member this month.

JULY:

This was a really special month for us here at GHF we held our SUPER Open Day raising crucial funds for the Make-A-Wish foundation to help them transform the lives of children battling life-threatening medical conditions. The Open Day was superhero themed and involved everything from prizes and giveaways, a sausage sizzle, Les Mills launches and a Burpee-a-thon competition.

Our Burpee-a-thon involved fundraising for Make-A-Wish, entering either as an individual or a team completing as many burpees as possible in 15 minutes. It was a close call, but Eden Hills was crowned the winner, completing more than 200 burpees.

JUNE:

We all know that it’s easy to get off track during the colder months, we started our Winter Bootcamp sessions to help keep you all motivated – after all, Summer bodies are made in Winter.

Results from our first 6 Week Challenge were also released with a combined loss of 140 kilos and 112cm between all participants! Here’s just some of them enjoying a post-Challenge dinner at Black Buffalo Hotel – congratulations everyone, well-deserved.

MAY:

We celebrated an important milestone here at Glenorchy Health and Fitness in May – our 20th Birthday! In 1998 Glenorchy wasn’t a wealth of fitness options, but one of our owners, Andrea was determined to provide the community with access to an affordable place to get fit.

It’s been a remarkable journey! Here’s some throwback photos:

APRIL:

Preparations for our 6 Week Challenge were in full swing after Easter, which can easily be a time of eating far too much chocolate if we aren’t careful. Whether it’s the extra calories from eating too many chocolates and hot cross buns, binge eating, lack of exercise or disruption of regular routine it can be a tough time when on your health and fitness journey. But thanks to our special post-Easter deal (no joining fee), we helped many of our members stay accountable.

Even our Instructors and Food Coaches Kendall and Lydia know the temptation all too well.

MARCH:

March started off with some brand new launches, including MetaPWR Black Hole, which is like the original but with a twist – adding weights.

We also held a stall at the Wellness Expo at Princes Wharf – we loved meeting lots of new people and gaining new members for our club.

FEBRUARY:

It’s hard to remember a time without our MetaPWR classes but in February we launched this brand new class which has been incredibly popular with our members. MetaPWR is a small group functional workout program for 30 minutes of high intensity interval training (HIIT). If you haven’t yet tried this class, we suggest you do – the results speak for themselves.

JANUARY:

NEW YEAR, NEW US! We started off 2018 well with a new class gaining popularity, Metafit. This class can be described in just 3 words – short, intense, rewarding. The workout only lasts 30 minutes and is designed to work the whole body and last for over 24 hours. It wasn’t the only new option with Punch Plus (a higher intensity, faster pace and more cardio than the original) also on offer in time for the New Year.

We thank all our members at Glenorchy Health and Fitness for a successful, rewarding and exciting 2018. We hope you all have a healthy, active and happy 2019!
